The City of Washington DC is the world’s destination. Home of all three branches of the federal government, international organizations and some of the nation’s largest companies, the city naturally draws people from across the globe. The federal government is responsible for attracting organizations such as law firms, professional associations and nonprofits, as well as nearly 200 international organizations and embassies. 25% of the city’s employees also work for federal governmental agencies. However, the federal government isn’t fully responsible for the enormous spike in the city’s daytime population during the workweek. The city’s diversified economy is growing, especially in industries such as finance, education, research and public policy. In fact, according to the 2021 Global Financial Centre’s Index, the city’s financial district scored fourth most competitive in the country and 14th most competitive in the world. Tourism is, of course, one of the strongest industries in a city that houses some of the country’s most impressive historical monuments. As the world’s destination, it’s no surprise that Washington DC is one of the most visited cities in the United States.
