United Way of Allegheny County Names Ray Buehler, Jr. 2014 Annual Campaign Chair

Released by the United Way of Allegheny County:

Raymond W. Buehler CPA - Pittsburgh CPA FirmPittsburgh, Pa. (August 20, 2014) – United Way of Allegheny County recently named Raymond W. Buehler, Jr., chairman of Schneider Downs & Co., Inc., chair of this year’s annual campaign.   Each year, the annual campaign raises more than $33 million to support vital programs and services benefitting the residents of Allegheny County.

“United Way is a powerful convener around important social issues that impact each one of us,” said Buehler.  “It’s this kind of vision and commitment to real, effective solutions addressing immense and diverse needs that makes United Way a critical part of our community.  Every dollar brought in is effectively used.”

Buehler has been with Schneider Downs since 1975.  A steadfast leader in Pittsburgh’s business community, he hopes to engage more of the region’s business leaders in United Way’s work.  Additionally, he believes in the power of the entire community coming together to help those in need.

“Ray is an outstanding business leader, model philanthropist and deeply committed to the well-being of Allegheny County and its residents,” said Morgan O’Brien, President and CEO, Peoples Natural Gas and United Way board chair.  “These qualities wonderfully position him to lead United Way’s fundraising efforts this year.”

Buehler has served on United Way’s board of directors for 2.5 years. Additionally, he serves on the boards of Homeless Children’s Education Fund and Vincentian Collaborative System, among others. He’s also part of the Allegheny Conference Regional Investor Council. Buehler also serves on boards of directors for numerous companies.

Moreover, Buehler has integrated philanthropic work into Schneider Downs’ daily operations.  Ten percent of Schneider Downs’ business is devoted to not-for-profit work.  Last fall, Schneider Downs launched the Mentoring Matters financial coaching program in partnership with United Way and NeighborWorks America.  More than 40 Schneider Downs employees have volunteered their time to mentor women working to achieve financial stability.  Additionally, employees are regularly encouraged to participate in activities that benefit the community.

“Far and away, community involvement and philanthropy is part of the culture of our firm,” said Buehler.  “We’re a group of people who care about our community.  In fact, the ‘care factor’ is one of the most important traits we consider when hiring new employees.”

As part of its annual initiative, United Way’s fall workplace campaigns engage more than 700 local businesses each year, representing more than 60,000 donors.  In addition, several thousand individuals in the community donate and volunteer. Last year, donations to United Way assisted more than 100,000 people in need across Allegheny County, helping to develop children and youth to their full potential, creating strong families, supporting people rebuilding their lives, keeping seniors safe in their homes, and helping people with disabilities achieve greater independence.

“United Way helps people across the spectrum of their lives,” said Buehler.  “If everyone cares a little bit more, we can collectively achieve great things.”
