Walking into the looming glass castle, I wasn’t sure what to expect from my first internship.
Looking up at the pointed towers that adorned the PPG building, my thoughts focused on making sure I wasn’t late for my first full day of work. Before this, all the summer 2024 interns engaged in a week and a half of orientation, where I learned about the company and the minutiae of tax return software and databases. So, I was more than ready to start my first real day on the job.
Flash forward to one week later, I got my first assignment. It was supposed to be a quick 30-minute task, but it took me what felt like forever. I spent the first bit fumbling around trying to figure it out on my own since I was nervous about bothering the full-time staff members. They had plenty of work to do and I didn’t want to add mine on top of it.
Finally, I worked up enough courage to ask for help. An analyst was able to quickly guide me through the software and show me what numbers we were looking for as well as helpful tips to keep in mind when double-checking my work.
