My experience with the Schneider Downs team was impactful and rewarding. Schneider Downs went above and beyond to welcome all of the interns and established a friendly, collaborative workplace environment.
We had breakfasts provided, golf happy hour, gifted SD gear, a Pirates game and more. Every day I looked forward to going to work to contribute to a firm that I can see myself working for long-term. The culture and care for all employees, along with the professionalism of working in one of the largest accounting firms in Pittsburgh, allowed me to acquire real-world skills and knowledge that will benefit my future career.
Additionally, the flexibility of the hybrid work option was convenient and appreciated. It highlighted the importance of self-discipline and the benefit of working for a firm that appreciates its employees as individuals who all contribute to the collaborative effort of assisting clients. Remote work taught me how to remain on task amid distractions, stay organized in my work and be conscious of timing. Although I value the option of remote days, working from home also made me look forward to driving and coming into the office much more, due to my experiences with the people of Schneider Downs.
One of my most memorable work experiences was traveling on-site to visit a client. We took a tour, saw how the company operated and then regrouped to work on the plan for the client. It was interesting to work with that engaging business client – an opportunity that I likely would not have had at another firm. The opportunity to understand the impact and importance of the firm’s services first-hand revealed another impressive aspect of working for Schneider Downs.
Another memorable experience from my internship occurred while I was walking to the Pirate game. Alongside my fellow interns, I noticed a van on the road with a familiar logo. I recognized that it was one of the clients I had worked on for a few weeks. Seeing the van was rewarding because I was able to reflect on my efforts for the client in a small way, which I shared with the interns I was with. This is a memory I will never forget because I was able to see a client I worked on, doing work out in the real world.
Finally, volunteering at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank with Schneider Downs was my favorite experience of all because it showed SD’s volunteering commitment to the community beyond the walls of the firm. Together in teams, we boxed food items in an assembly line that were then given to people in need. We were also given a tour of the facility. I could see the gratitude of the Food Bank towards the volunteers and Schneider Downs for taking the time to volunteer for the day. It felt good to help, and the whole experience reminded me about the importance of service and giving back in any way I can.
I do not think I could have worked for a better accounting firm this summer, especially at this point in my life. I am grateful for the opportunities I had at Schneider Downs this summer and to all of those who have guided me as an audit intern and have welcomed me as a young professional!
