The latest in an ongoing series of articles about innovation transformation in the Schneider Downs Audit Practice
Introduction: A Practical Approach to Change
As audit professionals, we are continually challenged to deliver high-quality work efficiently and accurately. Over the past year, I have been closely involved in evaluating and integrating new technologies into our audit practice at Schneider Downs. As a member of our Audit Innovation Transformation Committee, my role has centered on using structured change management to ensure these tools not only enhance our processes but also support our team and clients through the transition. The goal is not to boast about innovation for its own sake, but to share how thoughtful change management can yield tangible benefits for our staff and the organizations we serve.
From Evaluation to Implementation: Building a Foundation for Success
Our journey began with a thorough evaluation of multiple technology vendors. We ultimately selected Dynamic Audit Solution (DAS) for its standout features, and I joined the proof of concept (POC) team. During this hands-on experience two of my audit clients transitioned to the new platform, demonstrating early wins in efficiency and accuracy. Alongside my colleague Patrick Kerns, I help lead the technology strategy for our audit department, overseeing the integration of tools like Data Snipper, CoPilot, Suralink, IDEA, and many others. Our focus is always on equipping our staff with effective resources to enhance their daily work and our clients’ experience.
Navigating Change: Addressing Team Dynamics
Change is rarely comfortable, but it is often necessary. Our team is diverse— we have found that newer staff members (who have grown up with technology) often adapt quickly, while more experienced colleagues may need additional support because it is something new. We tailor our training to these different learning curves, emphasizing continuous learning at every career stage. This approach ensures that everyone, regardless of experience, can contribute to and benefit from our evolving audit practice. When we grow together, great things can happen.
The Role of Training and Communication
Effective change management hinges on preparation, clear communication, and mutual support. Our firm invests significantly in training to ensure staff are ready for new technologies. Ignoring feedback from POC teams or skipping training risks undermining the entire initiative. By prioritizing knowledge sharing and skill development, we empower auditors to execute their work successfully and advance their careers. Equally, by experiencing the training together we are fostering a sense of teamwork and community.
Enhancing the Client Experience
Of course, overall client satisfaction and our ability to meet the needs of each individual client will always be at the center of all that we do. If we aren’t meeting their needs, the technology is just another tool. That’s been our vision throughout our transformation initiative. While the core content and quality of our audit deliverables remain consistent, technology has transformed the process behind the scenes. Automation of routine tasks allows our auditors to focus on meaningful discussions with clients about their business challenges, such as significant or unusual transactions. This shift leads to more engaged, insightful interactions and a better overall client experience.
Becoming an Advocate for Innovation
My involvement in the POC team gave me a deeper understanding of the technology and its impact. This experience has enabled me to advocate for these tools within our practice, helping to inform broader rollout and training programs. Staying current with emerging technologies is a continuous process— Our committee regularly assesses our technology stack, engages with vendors, and pilots new solutions to keep our audit practice at the forefront. Speaking personally, I value having a front row seat to always knowing what’s coming next.
Conclusion: The Value of Ongoing Dialogue
Introducing new technology is not a one-time event but an ongoing journey. Open conversations about challenges and successes are essential for continuous improvement. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our firm’s technology strategy and look forward to further discussions about innovation in audit.
