How can digital transformation help maximize the value of an organization’s processes?
Digital transformation can be defined several ways. At Schneider Downs, we define digital transformation as the use of technology and business process optimization to improve the stakeholder experience.
But even beyond the basic definition, we also like to consider exactly how digital transformation truly impacts an organization’s people, processes and technologies.
In this article, we explore some of the key indicators that a company may need digital transformation to help improve and streamline key organizational processes.
1. Duplication of Efforts
Are there several processes that your organization uses to achieve the same goal? Are there instances where you find out there are duplicative efforts being made such as double entry or manual data management? In these cases, digital transformation can help identify process gaps and reduce instances of duplicative efforts or unnecessary work.
2. Lack of Data-Driven Decisions
How are decisions being made? Does management have access to data to help drive strategy? The decision-making process is one that needs to take into consideration qualitative and quantitative data which, if not easily accessible, can lead to delayed, misinformed or uninformed decisions.
3. Multiple Locations and Procedures
Standardized processes and procedures help organizations maintain stability across teams, departments and locations. If your organization has several locations that are not using standardized processes or even have internal issues due to compartmentalized procedures, digital transformation may help to define, streamline and improve those processes.
4. Processes Not Keeping Pace
Just because a process was sufficient for a company in the first few years, it may not continue to work when the company grows. Whether the growth is organic from expansion or due to acquisition, leadership must evaluate if processes are keeping pace with the business needs.
5. We’ve Always Done It This Way
When the immediate answer to a process question is “we have always done it this way”, chances are high that the process is broken to some extent. Not every process needs to be overhauled, but at the very least, they should be evaluated regularly to ensure it still aligns with its intended role and objectives.
If any of the points noted above resonate with you, it may be time to consider how a digital transformation may help or organization improve your human capital, processes and technology.
