The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has taken a significant step to modernize tax administration for tax-exempt organizations, government entities and partnerships.
As of April 8, 2026, these entities can now use the IRS’s Business Tax Account platform. This move is part of the IRS’s ongoing efforts to enhance transparency, efficiency and accessibility for taxpayers across the country.
In the past, only sole proprietors and corporations were able to use the Business Tax Account to manage their federal taxes online. This expansion means that partnerships and tax‑exempt organizations, including charities and certain government entities, now have the same online access to tax information that many businesses already use, and can avoid paperwork or lengthy phone calls.
Key Features and Benefits
The IRS Business Tax Account offers an array of features designed to simplify tax administration. Organizations can:
- View tax balances, make payments, and see payment history
- Download select digital notices
- View eligible transcripts, such as payroll and income
- Request a tax compliance check
- See the business name and address on file with the IRS
Next Steps and Support
With these new tools, the IRS hopes to foster greater compliance and ease for tax-exempt organizations, government entities, and partnerships.
Access to the platform can be initiated by a Designated Official. For tax-exempt organizations, a Designated Official must be an officer, board chairperson, or trustee. For a government entity, a Designated Official must be the Director of Taxation, an appointed official, or an elected official. The Designated Official can then authorize Designated Users in the system.
