If you’re like me, you’re not so patiently waiting for the Summer Olympic Games to begin. Anticipation is high, as elite athletes prepare for the world stage and fans are ready to watch their hard work unfold over more than two weeks of action-packed games.
It was recently announced that NBC plans to use Gen AI – generative artificial intelligence – to recreate Al Michaels’ voice for daily Olympic recaps on Peacock, the network’s streaming service. This will provide opportunity for a high level of customization, as Peacock estimates that nearly seven million variants of the recap could be produced for subscribers. It’s also an opportunity for NBC to showcase its innovation and creativity while maximizing efficiency and level of service.
While this is a huge advancement in the use of Gen AI, it doesn’t come without substantial risk. Not unique to NBC, some key points that should be considered when exploring uses of Gen AI include:
Governance and monitoring: how employee usage of Gen AI is guided and monitored to foster use that is ethical and aligned with the organization’s values
Data privacy/security: accessing and handling data in compliance with relevant laws/regulations and without data breaches or misuse
Reliability and accuracy: reviewing content output for accuracy and reliability; how trust in Gen AI is earned and AI Hallucination is avoided
Reputation: how content remains authentic to the organization’s brand and avoids harmful, inappropriate or offensive content
While associated risks evolve nearly as rapidly as uses of Gen AI, the good news is that there are steps that can be taken now to mitigate those risks. Some essential steps include:
- Establishing a framework and clear guidelines on responsible practice and ethical use of Gen AI
- Equipping employees with a controlled AI tool
- Educating employees on how to use and how not to use Gen AI
- Regularly monitoring and auditing AI systems and output to verify they are operating as intended
- Creating crisis monitoring plans to respond quickly and effectively to any issues that arise
- Being transparent with stakeholders (both internal and external) in uses of Gen AI
- Continuously learning and improving
With equal parts interest and uncertainty, I await the outcome of NBC’s choice to use Gen AI, and with unequivocal excitement, I await the opening ceremony to kickoff the 2024 Paris games.
