Embracing Opportunity: My Journey Into Audit Innovation
When I first joined Schneider Downs, I didn’t expect to find myself at the forefront of technological change within the firm. Early in my career, I was invited to participate in meetings and pilot programs focused on bringing new technologies—like Dynamic Audit Solution (DAS), Datasnipper, and Copilot tools—into our audit practice. Being the only Staff in a room full of experienced leaders was intimidating, but it was also an invaluable learning experience. I quickly realized that my perspective was not only welcomed, but actively sought out. Having a seat at the table during these discussions gave me firsthand insight into how impactful decisions are made in our business and how each voice, no matter their level, can influence the direction of the firm.
The Role of Technology in Shaping Senior Accountants’ Careers
I’ve always had an interest in technology—so much so that I minored in information systems in college. But it was through joining the Audit Efficiency and Effectiveness Committee and later, the software selection committee, that I truly saw the possibilities for innovation in accounting. As technology rapidly evolves, so too does our approach to audits. The tools we’re piloting now have fundamentally changed the way we work. For staff and seniors, these advancements mean we spend less time on tasks that may seem routine or repetitive, and spend more time on meaningful analysis.
In the past, it could take a day or two just to get client data into a usable format. Today, with AI and automation, invoices can be uploaded and tested in a matter of moments. This allows us to move more quickly into reviewing and interpreting results, rather than getting bogged down by manual data manipulation. The result? We’re able to develop our analytical and supervisory skills much earlier in our careers.
How Innovation Frees Us to Serve Clients Better
One of the most significant changes I’ve observed is how technology enables us to become trusted advisors to our clients sooner. Gone are the days when staff would spend hours in a room, heads down, churning through data. Now, we can deliver insights and analysis more quickly, which means we’re able to engage in deeper, more meaningful conversations with our clients. This shift not only improves the client experience—offering them timely, actionable feedback—but it also strengthens our relationships with them.
Clients appreciate the speed and clarity that technology brings. When we piloted DAS with one long-standing client, we were upfront about the changes and eager to hear their feedback. They embraced the new approach, recognizing the value and efficiency it brought to the process. With other clients, the conversation has shifted to how they themselves can leverage AI and automation within their organizations. Having firsthand experience navigating these changes at Schneider Downs allows us to offer relevant advice and serve as partners in their own innovation journeys.
The Power of Diverse Perspectives in Driving Change
Looking back, I’m grateful that our leadership saw the importance of including staff and seniors in the innovation process. We’re the ones most directly interacting with the technology, and our day-to-day experiences provide critical insights into what works and what doesn’t. By having a voice at the table, we can advocate for tools and processes that truly improve our work lives and, in turn, enhance our service to clients.
This experience has not only deepened my technical knowledge but also expanded my network within the firm. I now regularly field questions from colleagues in other offices, helping them navigate new tools and apply them to unique client situations. These interactions have given me a broader view of the business and honed my ability to see the big picture—skills that will serve me well as I grow into managerial and supervisory roles.
Innovation as a Catalyst for Career Growth
Being part of the Audit Technical Innovation Committee and a DAS Champion has accelerated my development in ways I never expected. It’s pushed me to learn quickly, think strategically, and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Most importantly, it’s shown me that embracing new opportunities—especially those that seem daunting at first—can open doors both for yourself and for those you serve.
As technology continues to evolve, I’m confident that the role of the auditor will become even more dynamic and client-focused. By stepping up to lead and learn, seniors like myself can help shape the future of our profession and deliver even greater value to our clients. I’m excited to be part of this journey and look forward to seeing where innovation takes us next.
