Client: Nationally-Renowned Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Firm
How it Started

Twenty-five years ago, one of our current clients faced a dilemma. As the local arm of one of the largest construction contractors in the world, they had extremely tight audit deadlines from their group auditors. Because they needed a firm with both the capacity and deep industry expertise to meet those deadlines, they believed their options were limited to working with a Big 4 firm. However, they found that the traditional “Big Four” approach wasn’t ideal for their unique needs, and they searched for a better value proposition. If they were to invest in professional services, they wanted partners who would know their organization like the back of their hands. In light of its extensive experience in the construction industry, Schneider Downs was identified as the ideal for this assignment.
No Surprises

It was immediately apparent that to meet the type of deadlines set out by the group auditor, there could be no room for error or a learning curve. This wasn’t a “learn-as-you-go” procedure—we had to come in with the expertise to get the job done. Fortuitously, our robust construction practice was equipped to handle everything that came up. Whether it be accounting for claims, variable considerations, multi-year projects, or joint ventures, our experience prepared us to achieve a successful, timely audit.
Each year, we sat down with the client, took stock of what was going on in their business, and laid out exactly what we needed to do to meet the deadline that year. We helped them get their arms around a daunting process by walking back each year’s audit map, calendar and close process. We committed to codeveloping the plan that worked best for them. Simply put, we plan the work and work the plan.
How it's Going

We’ve been together for 25 years, weathering multiple ownership transitions, changes in group auditors and countless complex business activities. At the core of the relationship is a mutual appreciation and commitment to the project at hand – on-time delivery. The audit process has become a well-oiled machine thanks to our robust partnership. At times, the challenges may seem daunting – we recently met a seemingly impossible 12-day close deadline – but the rapport generated by a quarter of a century together makes it run. The net result is that our client trusts us through it all.
